Winter at Triangle X Ranch

For its first 3 decades of operation, the Triangle X was completely isolated during the winter months. There were no plowed roads providing access by motor vehicles to this area of Jackson Hole. Trips to town for supplies or appointments involved horse-drawn sleighs and thus occurred only a couple of times each winter.

The Turners were completely isolated. However, they kept busy feeding hay to their cattle and horses, constantly keeping wood stoves supplied with firewood for cooking and heating, working on buildings, and making furniture for the main lodge or guest cabins. Blocks of ice had to be harvested from nearby ponds and stored for the upcoming summer and fall to cool food ice boxes. Also, it was a time for corresponding with and scheduling prospective guests who might be interested in coming to the ranch the following season.

Today, the ranch is open for guests during the winter. It is Grand Teton National Park’s only accommodation available in winter. Folks come to enjoy the ranch’s spectacular winter scenery, try cross-country skiing on groomed trails, or snowshoeing across local landscapes. Some take day excursions away from the ranch – perhaps to join a sleigh ride viewing wintering elk on the National Elk Refuge, a dog sled ride to a mountain warm-springs, or a snow coach or snowmobile visit to Yellowstone National Park.

Most of the ranch horses have been moved from the ranch to enjoy a well-deserved rest for the winter season. A few are kept at the ranch for training, and winter guests often enjoy greeting them when they come up to the gate for a scratch. The winter pace at the ranch is more relaxed. Folks might enjoy curling up to a snug fireplace with a favorite book and a glass of wine, or a refreshing dip in the hot tub to watch the sunset over the Teton range. For meals, one can select from a menu with special daily offerings of items ranging from omelets to waffles, steaks to seafood. Very popular wine pairings are scheduled periodically. Winter is a special season at the Triangle X.
